In the Classroom with Ms. Doenmez’s History Class
Today, Ms. Doenmez’s class discussed the book, We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda by Philip Gourevitch. This book focusses on the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which an estimated 1,000,000 Tutsis and Hutus were killed. Students shared passages and offered insights, approaching this difficult topic with respect and curiosity.
This class has also studied the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. The Rwandan genocide is the last one we will examine in detail. Students are working to understand the causes of genocide, perpetrator behavior, resistance and rescuers - the different choices people can make in the face of genocide - and different efforts toward creating justice in the wake of these tragedies. We are honored to host guest speakers Martin Rumschedit and Ali Avery '09 who is completing a PhD in Genoicde Studies at Clark University with a dissertation on the Rwandan Genocide.
